Archibald McIntyre papers, 1849-1853.

Collection contains detailed letters concerning attempts to mine gold in Rutherford County, N.C. Topics include purchase and sale of local properties, use of African American laborers, mineral wealth in the state, location of gold veins, other local mining operations, and inherent risks in the business. The majority of the letters to McIntyre are from Frederic Bronson, a land speculator, money lender, banker, and promoter of westward expansion who resided in N.Y. Other correspondents include Reuben Hause and Mathew W. Davis. Notes on the backs of the letters reference dates of replies, and information associated with or action prompted by the letter. Some letters are copies, others include full text of replies.

Frederic Bronson was born on May 2, 1802 in New York (City), the son of Isaac and Anna (Olcott) Bronson. He was a land speculator, money lender, banker, and promoter of westward expansion. He lived in New York (City) and Connecticut. Frederic married Charlotte Brinckerhoff on March 1, 1838. They had at least three children: Frederic, Charlotte, and Louisa.
